About PermitCosts.com
PermitCosts.com is a free, independent resource that helps homeowners understand building permit costs before they start a renovation project. We believe permit fee transparency reduces surprises, improves project planning, and ultimately helps homeowners make better decisions.
Our Mission
Building permit fees are public information, but they're scattered across hundreds of municipal websites in different formats — PDF fee schedules, online calculators, buried in municipal code. We collect, organize, and present this data in a consistent, easy-to-understand format so you can quickly find what you need.
Currently covering: 25 major US cities across 5 common residential project types — kitchen remodels, bathroom renovations, deck additions, electrical panel upgrades, and HVAC replacements.
Our Methodology
Every data point on PermitCosts.com follows a consistent research process:
- Primary sources only: We use official city government fee schedules, published on municipal websites (.gov domains). We never rely on third-party estimates or contractor anecdotes as primary data.
- Fee schedule review: We download and analyze the most current published fee schedule for each city's building/development services department.
- Range calculation: Fee ranges represent typical residential project scenarios — from simple scopes (e.g., cosmetic kitchen refresh with minor plumbing) to comprehensive renovations (full gut renovation with structural changes).
- Average estimation: The "average" figure represents the most common scenario for that project type — a mid-range residential project in terms of scope and cost.
- Verification date: Every page shows when the fee data was last verified against the source. We aim to re-verify annually.
Data Sources
Our data comes exclusively from official municipal sources, including:
- Published city fee schedules (PDF and web-based)
- Municipal permit fee calculators
- City building department websites
- Official municipal code sections on permit fees
Each city page includes a direct link to the source document or website so you can verify the data yourself.
Important Limitations
While we strive for accuracy, please keep these limitations in mind:
- Fees change: Cities update their fee schedules periodically (usually annually). Always verify current fees directly with your local building department before budgeting.
- Ranges, not quotes: Our fee ranges cover common scenarios but may not match your specific project. Unusual scopes, large projects, or special conditions can result in fees outside our stated range.
- Sub-permits vary: Many projects require additional sub-permits (electrical, plumbing, mechanical) that may or may not be included in the ranges shown.
- Not legal advice: This site provides informational data only. It does not constitute legal, financial, or construction advice.
